The National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) defines athletic trainers as “highly qualified, multi-skilled health care professionals who render service or treatment, under the direction of or in collaboration with a physician, in accordance with their education, training and the state’s statutes, rules and regulations.”
Services provided by athletic trainers include primary care, injury and illness prevention, wellness promotion and education, emergent care, examination and clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention, and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions.

No, they are not the same. While both are exercise science professions and may even have some overlap when it comes to day-to-day tasks and responsibilities, the two are quite different.
The main difference is that athletic trainers are healthcare professionals, while personal trainers are fitness professionals. Athletic trainers are educated on assessing, evaluating, and treating injuries and illnesses. To practice as an athletic trainer, one must first complete the higher education requirements and become board-certified and state-licensed.
On the other hand, there are few regulations or requirements for personal trainers. While there are many excellent personal trainers who excel in their field and choose to further their education, this isn’t always the case, as it is not mandatory for personal trainers to continue their education or receive certification.
